International Development & Support

The BACB currently accepts certification applications from individuals regardless of their country of residence. Effective January 1, 2023, only individuals who reside in the United States (US), Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom (UK)* may apply for BACB certification. BACB certificants who obtain their certification before January 1, 2023, may maintain their certification as long as they continue to meet recertification requirements. The BACB’s original announcement from 2019 provides additional information about this change. Please refer to this web page for updates about future certification availability in other countries.

Coursework from a Verified Course Sequence (VCS) approved under an Alternative Pathway in which courses are taught outside of an accredited educational institution must be completed before January 1, 2023.** Effective July 1, 2023, the BACB will no longer accept non-university coursework. Any individual who wishes to pursue BCBA or BCaBA certification with coursework from such a VCS must submit a fully approvable application*** by June 30, 2023.

The translated versions of the BCBA and BCaBA examinations (Spanish, Chinese, Hebrew, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Korean, and Polish) have been discontinued as of January 1, 2022. All related translated documents have also been retired.

Individuals who reside in a country other than US, Canada, Australia, or the UK and who are authorized to sit for a BACB examination on/after January 1, 2021, will not be permitted to do so after December 31, 2022. Therefore, all authorized examination attempts must be completed before January 1, 2023 or they will be expired as of January 1, 2023. Effective January 1, 2023, only individuals who reside in the US, Canada, Australia, and the UK may schedule and sit for a BACB examination.

Country-Specific Support

The BACB remains committed to supporting the international dissemination of behavior analysis standards around the world. The BACB has reallocated resources to assist national behavior analysis organizations (or organizations that represent the consensus view of the behavior-analytic community within a country) in the development of their professional infrastructure, including the development of new credentialing programs. Support might include in-person or remote consultation, resource development and small grants, among others. Requests for assistance in developing new credentialing programs will involve securing a local expert on professional regulation to assist in identifying a course of action suited to the country’s existing regulatory infrastructure. Requests for support may be submitted using the button at the top of the page.

In this episode, Dr. Melissa Nosik hosts a discussion with Drs. Jim Carr and Neil Martin and Board President Dr. Bridget Taylor about the upcoming changes to the BACB's international focus, which includes answers to frequently asked questions.

*Individuals who reside in the UK may continue to apply for BACB certification through 2025. This date may be moved earlier if the UK Society for Behaviour Analysis achieves national recognition for UK behavior analysts, develops its own credentialing system, and transitions current BACB certificants into the new UK system.

**When coursework is no longer acceptable, it may not be used to mark the onset of fieldwork.

***An approvable application is one that contains all of the necessary elements for approval. For example, an approvable BCBA or BCaBA application submitted by June 30, 2023, would include the following:

  • payment in full
  • complete and accurate documentation showing that all fieldwork and coursework requirements have been met
  • proof of an acceptable degree that meets all applicable requirements, including official transcript(s) with conferral dates
