This episode of Inside the BACB is the second in an ethics-based series titled The Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts. Join CEO Dr. Jim Carr and Director of Ethics Dr. Tyra Sellers as they systematically break down and analyze the first section of the new Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts, Responsibility as a Professional.
The BACB annually honors an individual to commemorate the life and contributions of Michael Hemingway, who played a central role in the development of behavior analyst certification in Florida before serving as a founding director of the BACB. Michael’s commitments to the profession of applied behavior analysis and to increasing access to services are reflected in the behavior of the individual who receives this award.
We are pleased to announce that the 2021 recipient of the Michael Hemingway Behavior Analysis Award is the late Dr. Jose Martinez-Diaz, BCBA-D (1950-2020). A former member of the BACB Board of Directors, Dr. Martinez-Diaz founded the behavior analysis training programs at Florida Institute of Technology. Through their on-campus and online offerings, Dr. Martinez-Diaz directly influenced thousands of students in their pursuit of education in behavior analysis. Through his professional accomplishments, he fully embodied the spirit and core purpose of applied behavior analysis: improve the lives of others. His teachings were based on a desire to better, strengthen, and grow the practice of behavior analysis to help protect vulnerable populations around the world, and he passed this personal mission on to his many students. In the kind words of his colleagues, peers, and students, he was a visionary, a fighter for justice, a beloved mentor, and a dear friend. We thank you and will miss you, Jose.
